Maleficent and Her Pet Rock

Why did Maleficent use a floating rock propelled by her powers? I don't get why she didn't just fly across the room like Jafar did...? She would've been much more of a challenge that way. Also it would've been easier on her energy, unless she weighed more than the rock...wait... ah I'm thinking too much.
